Can't make the trip to see the Great Pyramid in Egypt right now? No problem! In just a few minutes, you can replicate the structure right in your own home! Here's a step-by-step illustrated guide showing you how to do it. You will need seven things:
1) A large peice of rigid craft paper - any color is fine. I chose white.
2) A pair of scissors.
3) Lead pencil.
4) Geometry compass. Make sure it grabs the pencil firmly. Your measurements must be precise
5) Regular scotch tape.
6) Your favorite decorating medium. For this project, I'm using coloring pencils. Watercoloring paint, or
gouache or other mediums are fine as well.
7) A ruler. I'm using a six inch ruler, but a twelve inch one is better.
1) Alright then. Let's get started. The first thing you'll want to do is use the pencil and compass. Set the compass to exactly 5 7/8 inches. Than create a smooth, well defined circle on the paper.
2) Using the ruler, now define the outer edge of the pyramid template by drawing four straight lines every six inches.
3) The third step consists of cutting out your design. Again, be as careful as possible. You'll end up with a flattened pyramid that looks like this. Now place the ruler along each of the pyramid's edges and work them a bit to loosen them up. Just be careful you don't tear them.
4) Grab a few small peices of tape and tape together the ends of the pyramid from the inside. When you're done, set the pyramid up and voila! An instant small scale replica of the Great Pyramid right in your home.
5) The last step is to personalize your pyramid. Use whatever medium you prefer. If you're going to use watercolor, I recommend using standard watercolorist's paper stretching and drying techniques in order to prevent the paper from buckling up. No prior preparations are required if normal coloring pencils are used however. Be creative, the pyramid's architect certainly was!
